What is the role of consumers in order to curb the electricity shortfall? How can one utilize the available electricity efficiently?
ANS:
Consumers should use electricity sparingly and conserve it by:-
- Switching off un-used appliances and lights.
- Using more energy efficient appliances and equipment.
- Regularly carrying out energy audits in our premises and endeavour to mitigate electricity wastage.
- Regularly servicing their equipment to reduce current leakages, sparking and overheating, all of which reflect energy wastage.
Other energy saving measures we can adopt to reduce one’s electricity bills include the following:
With Ironing:
- Turn off the iron five minutes before all clothes have been ironed and finish ironing with heat stored in the sole plate of the ironing box.
- Always turn off the iron when work is interrupted e.g. by telephone or doorbell.
- Iron your clothes at once – preferably during the day (not in the evening).
- Use low wattage appliances where possible.
- First iron those fabrics that require lower temperature and work up to those that require more heat. An iron box heats faster than it cools so it is quicker to go from lower to higher temperatures than the reverse. Less energy is needed for this too.
Lighting:
- Use energy savers like florescent tubes, energy saving bulbs instead of high wattage incandescent bulbs.
- Make sure that outdoor lighting is turned off during daytime.
- Urge people to turn off lighting when leaving a room. This habit can be encouraged more easily if every area has its own switch.
- Switch off lights & appliances when not needed.
Refrigeration:
- Discourage leisurely open-door inspections of refrigerators and freezer contents by family members. This is because each time the door of the Refrigerator or freezer is opened; the compressor has to run a little longer to replace the cold air that spills out.
- Buy new appliances, instead of old inefficient ones. Old fridges, cookers, TVs’, and kettles consume a lot of electricity compared to new ones.
Water heating / cooking:
- Use instant water heaters or solar water heaters instead of storage water heaters. Each time water cools in the storage water heater the electricity used to heat it up in the first place is wasted.
- Use cookers with solid plates instead of radiant coils for cooking.
- Encourage family members to take a shower rather than bath. The average person will use half as much hot water in a shower as in a bath tub.
- Educate all family members in avoiding energy wastage.
Industrial saving techniques:
- Carry out Industrial energy audits to identify losses and power wastage and eliminate it.
- Large Industrial consumers should operate at power factors above 0.9 to improve efficiency.
