Why do we continue to have load shedding?
ANS:
The simple answer as to why we experience load shedding is because demand for electricity far outstrips supply. Below is the demand and supply status report to-date.
- Electricity supply at peak now averages at approximately 305MW. The break down is as follows: - Aggreko – 100MW, Eskom – 205MW and Kakira – 6 MW.
- Demand now stands at approximately between 365MW and 375MW (due to supply constraints).
- Deficit for electricity is approximately 90MW - 95MW during evening (peak) hours.
Outcome of Uganda’s present energy status:
- Load shedding due to a deficit in electricity supply of approximately 90MW during the evening hours.
- Uganda’s GDP growth rate constrained due to insufficient power supply.
- Diesel firedelectricity generation is now half of Uganda’s generated supply.
- Unfavorable high tariffs due to high oil prices.
