THE ELECTRICITY SUB-SECTOR ACHIEVEMENTS AND CHALLENGES UP TO MARCH 2008

e)         Other Generation projects approved by ERA

• SN Power abandoned its interest in the two project sites i.e. 13MW at Bugoye and 5MW at Waki Hoima due to internal issues. ERA issued a 25 year license to a new company, Tronder Power Ltd from Norway, so as to progress the development of the Bugoye Mini hydro project. Tronder Power has obtained a license.
• ECO Power obtained an ERA license for the 5MW hydro site at Ishasha, Kanungu District.
• A successful Public Hearing was held in Hoima Town by ERA following which ERA issued a license to Hydromaxx for the development of a 9MW mini hydro project at Buseruka Gorge in Hoima District.  This is a 30 year power production licence.
• ERA has issued a license to China Shan Sheng for the development of a 10MW Mini hydro power project at Kikagati in Mbarara District.
• ERA issued a three year license effective 1st March 2008 to Electromaxx for the development of a 10MW Heavy Fuel Plant (HFO) in Tororo District.
• Jacobsen Electro AS which was licensed by ERA is on course to start electricity production in early July 2008. This is a 50MW HFO plant located in the Namanve area of Mukono district.
• The 50MW diesel generation project by Aggreko International in Mutundwe is on course to commence operation by the third quarter of 2008.
• A license application for a combined project of Generation and Distribution by Kalangala Infrastructure Services (KIS) is being processed by ERA.

NEW DISTRIBUTION COMPANIES LICENSED BY ERA

a)         Kilembe Investments Limited (KIL)

KIL applied for a distribution concession in Kasese and Bushenyi Districts. ERA issued the license on t 1st of August, 2007.

b)         WSS Services (U) Ltd

ERA issued a ten (10) year certificate of exemption for the distribution of 200KW of electricity over a 240/415 V network on the Bugala Island of Kalangala district.

c)         Ferdsult Engineering Services Ltd

ERA issued the company a ten (10) year license on 20th March, 2008 for the distribution of 4.5MVA of electricity in the Mubende-Kakumiro-Kagadi concession area. NOTE: the same company will shortly be licensed to operate the Nyakagyeme-Kanungu power distribution network.
